Split Ends: THE Interview

We sent Aidan Nicol (the former chairperson of Maddrim Media) to chat to Joe Christie, the writer and directors of Split Ends - one of the highlights of this year's Screenplay festival.

So, Joe, this year you wrote and directed the comedy short 'Split Ends'. Tell us a bit about the film, whats the story?

It's about four very extreme characters being put in a hilarious situation. They work in a not very popular hair dressing salon but luck is about to strike when a "major" celebrity enters it's doors and changes their lives forever!

What inspired you to write it?

I was doing my first daily booth picture (ed: check out www.dailybooth.com) and I started playing with a hair dryer, and then my good friend said "Wouldn't it be nice to make a hair dressing film??". Not really an inspirational story... but it's how it happened!

What were the main challenges you faced during production and post production?

Wigs.

What did you enjoy most about making split ends?

I enjoyed the massage chairs - although the next week they caught fire! Maybe they weren't the best...

In the film, you play a main role as 'Raven', can you relate to the character?

Laughs. Lets just say all the clothes I wore were mine - but apart from his slightly emo dress sense - no. I'm usually a very happy person.

Was the film based on a real life experience?

Yes, yes it was.

Any plans for a spin off or sequel?…or even prequel?

Yes. The birth of Raven.

What was it like working with household names such as Mhairi McNeill?

It was a great honour, I was so honoured when I heard she could be a part of the project, she is so beautiful - a real pro!

What does Shetland Mean to you?

It's a very safe and secure community - where you won't be attacked on the street for making a film like this... fingers crossed!

Thanks Raven!!

You can look forward to Split Ends appearing on YouTube very soon!
