Minutes 5th Jan 2011

Hey guys, here are the minutes from the meeting! They're super comprehensive because we are actually really good at discussing stuff!

First things first was the name and fact game (anyone else notice that when you say it aloud quickly it sounds like name and fat game?), which was met with the usual enthusiasm. I can't really remember any of the facts, so I guess they were all pretty unremarkable. Oh, except Kate's! Kate won a competition where she had to debate IN FLUENT FRENCH. Skills!

Lorcan asked everyone about their ideas for Screenplay. Pretty much everyone has at least one. Then there was much excitement considering the fact that Screenplay 2011 will be IN MAREEL!!! (the need for Mareel also became very apparent when Joe, Ceidiog and Roseanne were forced to spend an hour and a half in the Fort Chip Shop café as everywhere else was shut... *shakesfist at Shetland's overly long festive period*)

The main topic of the evening was the discussion of what these notes have coined as the Tall Ships Thing. Jaqui Clark has got in contact with us (emails attached) and asked us to make two short films about Shetland that will be shown at the opening ceremony of the Tall Ships, and to quote her email "The ceremony will be performed in front of like 5,000 folk plus national and international media (that's the carrot on the string bit)". She wants one film to be made from a birdseye perspective, the other to be filmed from the ground. Very strict limitations indeed. She mentions that she does not want puffins and fiddles (sigh of relief) but wants a reflection of Shetland today, and she would have artistic input but we would have a great amount of freedom in the designing of the films too.

Here were the points raised:

  • The timing of filming (Easter Break) is somewhat problematic for senior members who are sitting SQA exams, the demographic that just so happens to make up a rather large portion of Maddrim. Lorcan and Roseanne reckon that they will possibly be able to return to Shetland at the end of April/beginning of May but this does not correspond exactly with Easter Break time. As of yet we do not know when the other uni-goers will be returning. Let us know, veterans!
  • Are these films to be narrative or visual? We really want to make something snazzy if it's to be shown in front of such high-profile media people, and a plotless image-track isn't exactly going to capture an audience. Plus, Maddrim is renowned for the ability to squeeze whole stories into six minutes and under!
  • We should definitely untilise Oscar Charlie before he disappears for good :( there was a hilarious idea about getting the winchman to drop down and steal a chip from someone at the Fort. Even if we can't do it for this film that idea is definitely a keeper!
  • Ceidiog raised the idea of making crop circles, and then was shot down immediately by the fact this could open hostilities between Maddrim and farmers. The idea was developed into perhaps one of those demonstrations where people wear a certain colour and organise themselves into a shape that can only be seen from the air, or something like that.
  • I'm quoting directly from Joe's notes here... "WATCH OUT FOR DOUBLE CHINS - FILMING UP IS NOT FLATTERING."
  • We need to organise a meeting with Jacqui Clark. Roseanne meant to email her yesterday but her brother was doing weird things to the internet that prevented her, so has instead emailed her today and is awaiting a response.
After this had been done we discussed Maddrim dipping it's toes into other forms of media, such as radio. This led to reminising about the previous radio show, with such classics as chilli roulette and how we recorded over the Black Bic Biro interview for such quality audio, Frank's Food Review - "to be frank, Frank" and the preceding lines after that segment, "Mmmm, tasty! Just like this song!" *a horribly depressing song comes on*. It has been decided that a pilot will be made to see how enjoyable it is, which is a wise idea.

Then there was discussions about whether Maddrim should make a film review podcast or a film review channel on youtube. No real decision was agreed on, as there are pros and cons to both.

Then the cake film was briefly discussed but it was decided that time was limited and that the script should be emailed out. So it has been! Roseanne loves it a lot.

Lorcan hates Dundonians and old people (that's just what's written down in the notes, Lorcan, soz), and Lorcan wishes to remind people that Alternative Universe films are fun and easy to make in case you guys ever get bored! Lorcan also spoke about the plot of Stallionhead 3, which is going to be the best installment yet, though the ending was not revealed.

A group of us then had an idea for an alternative universe film at the bus stop, which is "A World Where Oesteoporosis Does Not Exist" *shot of an old lady rollerblading.*

Finito!

Roseanne x

Roseanne, I have misplaced your email address. Could you please get in touch on martin.summers@shetland.gov.uk. Would like to discuss Maddrim. I have also emailed the room bookings to the maddrim google account.
