Creative Ideas Workshop (with Improv)
Monday
3rd October 2011
A quick write up on how Monday’s Workshop
went. Before I begin I just want to say it was a brilliant night and everyone
who came was brilliant, a huge array of ideas were created and many, many more
jokes. I had a great time and am keen to do some more improv in the future,
please let me know if you’re keen to take part in more.. perhaps one day we can
make an improve film? Anyway to the report:
Present:
Joe Christie
Peter Keay
Craig Me Eu
Cara McDiarmid
Katya Moncrieff
Mathew Nicolson
Marjolein Robertson
Rachel Samson
Ceidiog Saxelby
Chloe Warner
The aim of this week’s workshop was to come
up with ideas for a new film through the power of our minds (and some mindless improv
games)
Introduction: After a quick ‘Hello’ to
everyone and ‘Cheerio’ to Katya (she had parent’s evening) and a
‘Congratulations!’ to Joe on his nomination we got down to business.
Game 1: Deaf Translator
Rules of the game: An interviewer and a
Professor discuss the Professor’s recent work training *insert animal here* to
play *insert sport here* whilst a third person has to ‘sign’ all the words for
the audience’s benefit.
Ideas from the game:
Breakdancing turtles (check with RSPCA)
Professor Lickingbottom (Should there be a hyphen?!)
Professor Lickingbottom (Should there be a hyphen?!)
-“Don’t insult my heritage!”
Game 2: Squeeze the Duck (if we could
afford a duck)
Rules of the game: 2 people are given
characters, a scene and a situation, whenever a third person (watching)
squeezes the duck (makes quacking sound) the last person who spoke must say a
different line in place of the previous one. Example:
“Stop eating the cheese!” Quack “Eat all the cheese” Oh the hilarity
“Stop eating the cheese!” Quack “Eat all the cheese” Oh the hilarity
Ideas from this game:
Mayoral debate
Monkeys in the fishpond
(Somewhere around now we played the Was
That A Question?! Game and it was really hard, really really hard, but I’ve
been watching ‘Who’s line is it anyway?’ since and it’s hard for them too! I
think we did it right..)
Game 4: The Film Quote Game! YEEEAH!!
Rules of the game: 2 people are chosen and
sent out the room, many, many film quotes are written down on pieces of paper,
which are then folded and left on the floor *ahem* stage.
2 actors return and are given a
relationship, setting and scenario which they must act out and occasionally pick
up a quote and work it into the sketch.
Ideas from this game:
Three friends in a pub fighting over a girl
Three friends in a pub fighting over a girl
“And then she said… they’re taking the
Hobbits to Isengard!”
Brother and clothes stealing sister (roles
reversed? Girl plays brother and vice versa) “And it said on the t-shirt..”
Game 5: Emotional Rollercoaster
Rules of the game: 3 actors with
characters, scene and scenario, (say three astronauts dancing on the moon
discussing Harry Potter.. it happened) they act out a quick sketch. Afterwards
they are each given an emotion, any emotion, and have to act the scene again
portraying their given emotion. Works very well when you up the emotions for a
second time… just think CALLIGOPH!
Ideas from this game:
Ceidiog, the activist for Narnian rights
Matthew the drag queen
Rachel the short-sighted, under-pressure
woman
Peter the loved up scientist
Calligoph (gopher calligraphy)
Game 6: The Director’s Cut
Every bit like Emotional Rollercoaster but
this time it’s not just the emotions you play with, no! it’s everything, from
film genre to taking away people’s limbs. It’s great fun and gave us a heap of
ideas:
And the ideas were:
Silent film
Man who is afraid of fruit (for instance:
melons)
Transsexual, no brain = hilarious death
PUBLIC INDECENCY: The Musical
Claustrophobic girl in a submarine on the
bottom of the sea
Psycopathic drag queen (wait, which one was
this?)
Ceidiog’s Italian nudist
Musical wedding sabotage leading to nudity
and “Prison Break”
So yes, we came of with heaps and heaps of
ideas which I am going to attempt to write all into one film (under 5 minutes
long) come along to the meeting next Monday to hear about the film story so
far.
To summarise; it was a very successful
evening, incredibly enjoyable and hilarious. Everyone came up with great ideas
and I cannot wait to start writing the film!
